After a few years in the wilderness, Cross Talk in 1980 was a reunion of sorts, marking the return of Dick Taylor and Wally Waller to the fold and with this more balanced line-up a return to earlier values and form. Cross Talk used an edgier, more stripped-down approach and showed a definite revitalization. Though not exactly the Pretty Things' 'new wave' album, it's strange to hear the Pretties borrowing occasional nuances from Elvis Costello and the Police, but there's no denying the emotional vitality of songs like 'No Future', 'Office Love' and the punkish 'Bitter End.' Here Phil May's lyrics found a new maturity and personal, confessional edge that is extremely powerful. Commercially, however, the record bombed and the band split up once again. |
